BMW’s first 5-series was a very highly acclaimed, modern sedan. With the new E28 series, one of the most significant developments was the optional fitment of the big 3.5-litre engine. The fuel injected 6-cylinder engine put out 136kW (184 bhp) which gave excellent performance for a mid-size luxury sedan.
Included were air conditioning, alloy wheels, computer, power windows, central locking, etc. The Executive version was identifiable by leather upholstery, rear headrests, cruise control and benefitted from limited slip differential.
This car was delivered new in Perth and was first registered in June 1987. It has the desirable option of an electric steel sunroof. The car changed hands in October 1990, then sold to the present owner in 1995. It was his late wife’s car and was very cherished.
The stamps in the service booklet show the car was dealer serviced until 1991 after which BMW specialist workshops took over care of the car.
The owner notes that the car has been extremely reliable, always provided good service and has not been involved in any accidents. It is very clearly a car which has been cherished. It presents very nicely inside and out. There’s no damage or undue wear visible.
The car starts immediately and runs well. It drives particularly nicely, exhibiting the strengths that the 535i is renowned for. There’s easy performance, smooth gearchanges and everything works as it should.
The 535i has covered 232,300km. It isn’t perfect, but it is very unlikely you would find a better example.
