This is an exceptionally nice example of MG’s rare fixed head coupe. In addition to the obvious fixed roof, there were several significant differences for the Coupe. These changes helped make a far more secure, cosy car, better suited to long distance or poor weather travel.

Looking at the production numbers shows this is a very rare car. In 1960 1452 Coupes were made in total, and of those just 52 were CKD kits in right-hand-drive. This is one of those 52 cars.

In Durban, South Africa several versions of the MGA were built from CKD kits, including 54 Coupes built between 1959 and 1961 – this car among them.

The car was sold new to Mr Jimmy Moggridge, who later became Chairman of the MG Car Club in Johannesburg. In 1981 he had the car restored to a multi award-winning standard. Moggridge retained the car until 2019 – just shy of 60 years of ownership. Pretty remarkable.

The present owner, an MG enthusiast who’d owned several others, had more work done to the car after purchase, including engine and gearbox rebuilds. The seats were re-trimmed in red leather, the original colour for the car’s interior.

In 2021 the owner migrated to Australia and brought the MGA with him. It has been put on C4C registration through the MG Car Club and has been on the occasional club run. The owner advises that the car is particularly reliable – and that it always starts with ease.

It presents beautifully, on optional wire wheels, the lovely colour offset by the additional chromework a Coupe has. In the cabin, the engine bay, the boot, underneath – everywhere, this car presents extremely well.

Rarity, history, condition and beauty are combined so well in this MGA. It will make an excellent addition to any garage.
