1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Supercharged Zagato – $435,000

This striking Alfa Romeo captures the spirit of the era where supercharged Alfas dominated in motorsport. The advanced engine featured twin-camshafts and the 1752cc 6-cylinder benefitted from a crankshaft-driven supercharger, producing 85 bhp at 4500rpm. With a 4-speed gearbox and lightweight bodywork, it was a formidable specification.

Author Graeme Cocks notes “Today, chassis number 0212736 is not clothed as it was when it left the factory but in its present form it represents the state of the art of the Italian sports car of 1929”. Indeed the 6C 1750 Super Sport was one of the all-time great sports cars.

Research shows the car made it to the USA by the early 1930s, in California. By the 1980s, the car had been shipped to England. It was later exchanged for another vintage Alfa Romeo to a well-known Australian Alfa Romeo enthusiast – who had an accident in the car whilst driving in England, damaging the bodywork. The damaged body was removed and sold and then the motor was sold to another buyer. The chassis and running gear were shipped home to Australia and in 2004 the chassis was shortened to SS length. Historic and Vintage Restorations began a rebuild, using a replica Zagato body which had been made for Diana Gaze (wife of Grand Prix driver Tony Gaze) for one of her historic racing Alfa Romeos, but never fitted – and the motor from another Alfa Romeo, period correct.

Historic and Vintage Restorations had unparalleled expertise in Australia in restoring prewar Alfa Romeos. The car changed hands again, to a South Australian owner in whose ownership the restoration was completed by HVR – to an extremely high standard.

In 2015 a Western Australian enthusiast purchased the Alfa. Since then the car has been used on club runs, has participated at the Melbourne Grand Prix historic events, done runs to Philip Island and the like and was kept in Melbourne for a period.

The car remains in absolutely beautiful condition throughout. It has proven to be very reliable – and thrilling to use – for its current owner. If sold to a WA buyer, the number plates ZAGATO 6C will go with the car.

An original 6C 1750 SS Zagato is worth a figure in the millions of dollars. This car is far more accessibly priced, uses genuine, period-matching components and offers the same exciting driving experience.
