The Phantom series has long been the pinnacle of the Rolls-Royce range. With a mighty 7.7-litre straight six engine, as powerful as it was smooth, the Phantom II oozed quality in design, engineering and construction.
In their day, a customer would order a new Rolls-Royce, and select a coachbuilder to make the bodywork and interior to their choice of style. Many coachbuilders had standard body styles available and others offered tailor made options.
This car came ‘off test’ by Rolls-Royce on December 28 1932. It was sent to coachbuilder Thrupp & Maberly to have sporty 4-door coachwork built for it. It was used as a demonstrator by a London Rolls-Royce dealer until a titled owner purchased it. A few owners later a less attractive body was fitted to the car as it was used by a funeral company as a formal limousine.
In 1964 the car was bought by a London owner who five years later emigrated to Australia and brought the car with him. After a few years of use, the car was parked up in a Sydney garage and not touched again until after his death. In 2018 the present owner bought the Phantom and brought it to Perth, undertaking a painstakingly accurate and detailed restoration.
The car is now presented as Rolls-Royce supplied cars new. It is drivable, runs beautifully and has been shown three times. On two occasions where judging took place, the car has won awards, including at the Rolls-Royce Owners Club Concours d’Elegance in April.
A close look at the superb attention to detail and finish will impress anyone. The car is ready to have the bodywork of choice of a new owner installed. A unique opportunity.
