1968 Mecedes-Benz 250SE Coupe – SOLD

Supremely stylish, hand finished and luxuriously appointed, the W111 Coupe was an extremely expensive car when new. This example was built at the end of 250SE production and first licensed in Sydney in early 1968.

Thirty three years ago a Western Australian enthusiast bought in it Sydney and had the car shipped to Perth. After a couple of years of use, he sent the car off for a complete repaint, engine out, glass out and had some small areas of rust repaired.

While this was being done, the owner took the opportunity to have other work undertaken on the car. This included a top end overhaul for the motor, repairs to the exhaust system, transmission seals, etc.

The result was a very good looking car which gave many years of good service. The car was used sparingly, for club events and on weekends.

A good practical measure was to install an air conditioning system, using all new parts. It works immediately and effectively today.

The owner recently passed away and the car is now being sold. The owner’s intention had been to give the Mercedes some attention, including the upholstery which is showing its age in some areas.

There’s an issue with the car’s running. While it starts well, idles and performs nicely, after some distance – between 10 and 15km – the engine can stall. After a few moments the car re-starts and runs fine again. This has been identified as a fuel delivery problem, which has not been resolved and will need to be attended to.

The car presents very nicely as can be seen in the photos. It is priced to allow the next owner to improve the car, making it a very attractive proposition.
