1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL – SOLD

The 280SL was the final and most developed model in the “Pagoda” SL range, and a highly desirable collector’s car today.

This example was sold new in the USA. It has the rare and desirable option of a small sideways-facing rear seat. If a 280SL had the larger forwards-facing seat, that meant the deletion of the soft-top, leaving only the removable hardtop. This car’s combination offered the best option – soft top, hardtop and an additional small rear seat. The car has power steering and a 4-speed manual gearbox.

Twelve years ago the current owner bought the car and had it shipped to Fremantle.

A new set of leather upholstery and carpet was imported with the car, in the original Parchment colour leather and Beige loop pile carpet – along with a new black soft top in the correct triple layer Mercedes hood cloth.

In 2015 the car was treated to a full repaint in the original attractive metallic gold colour.

The car was then converted to right hand drive. With the car are all the engineering applications and approval documentation for the conversion. During this major makeover, the 280SL had an engine-out motor rebuild.

Since completion, the Pagoda has seen minimal use, always being an extra car. The odometer shows just over 111,000 miles, having had 104,000 miles when it landed.

These Pagoda SLs offer pleasurable driving with decent performance, are immensely stylish and very usable classics – from a highly respected luxury brand. This example offers entry to Pagoda ownership at a very realistic price, with an understanding that dream asking prices are not what today’s buyers respond to.
